A slice is not just a frustrating shot that leaks into the trees. It is ball-flight feedback. If you have asked, what causes a slice swing, the useful answer is not simply “an over-the-top move.” A slice happens when the clubface is open relative to the club’s swing path at impact. The reason that face and path arrive there can be very different from one golfer to the next.

For a right-handed player, a slice usually starts left of the target and curves farther right, or starts near the target and keeps drifting right. Left-handed players experience the opposite ball flight. The goal is not to chase a generic swing position. It is to identify the delivery pattern producing your curve, then train a change you can repeat when it matters on the course.

What Causes a Slice Swing at Impact?

Modern launch-monitor data makes this easier to understand. The clubface has the strongest influence on where the ball begins. The relationship between the face and the club path determines how much the ball curves.

For a right-handed golfer, a slice requires a clubface that is open relative to the path. A common example is a path traveling left of the target line with a face that is less left than that path. Even if the face is technically pointed slightly left of the target, it can still be open relative to a significantly leftward path and create a fade or slice.

That distinction matters because golfers often see the ball curve right and instinctively try to aim farther left. That may keep a few shots in play, but it does not correct the delivery. In fact, aiming left can encourage an even more leftward path and make the slice stronger.

A playable fade is controlled: the face is only modestly open to the path, and the starting line is predictable. A slice is excessive curvature, usually paired with a loss of ball speed, inconsistent contact, and a shot pattern that becomes difficult to trust.

The Most Common Reasons the Face Stays Open

A weak or poorly matched grip

Grip is not about copying a certain number of visible knuckles. It is about whether your hands can return the clubface to a square, functional position without a last-second rescue move.

Many slicers have a lead hand positioned too far underneath the handle or a trail hand placed too much on top. This can make it difficult to rotate the face through impact. Others grip the club too tightly, which limits wrist motion and makes the release feel forced. A small grip adjustment can produce meaningful change, but it should be tested against actual ball flight rather than judged only by appearance.

An open clubface early in the backswing

The clubface does not usually become dramatically open in the final fraction of a second. Often, the pattern begins during the takeaway. If the golfer rolls the face open immediately or lifts the club away with disconnected arm and body motion, the downswing becomes a recovery mission.

From there, the player may try to throw the clubhead at the ball to square it. Sometimes that produces a single good shot. More often, it creates inconsistent contact and a face that remains open when speed increases.

A downswing that moves out and across the ball

This is the familiar over-the-top pattern. In transition, the upper body, shoulders, or arms move toward the ball and outward before the club has time to shallow behind the player. The club then approaches from outside the target line and travels left through impact.

An out-to-in path alone does not guarantee a slice. If the face is closed relative to that path, the result can be a pull or pull-hook. But pair that leftward path with a face that is open to it, and the ball curves sharply right.

The important question is why the path moves left. For some golfers, it is a sequencing issue. For others, it is a response to poor balance, a limited shoulder turn, or an attempt to hit hard from the top. Treating every out-to-in swing with the same drill is rarely efficient.

Limited rotation and poor pressure movement

A slice is often blamed entirely on the arms, but the body can create the conditions for it. Golfers who stay on their trail side too long, lose posture, or fail to rotate through the shot may run out of room to deliver the club from the inside. The arms react by throwing the club outward, and the path shifts left.

Mobility can play a role, particularly in the hips, thoracic spine, and lead ankle. Still, mobility is not automatically the problem. A golfer with excellent flexibility can slice, while a golfer with physical limitations can deliver the club very effectively. The priority is finding a movement pattern that fits your body and lets you control the clubface and path.

Trying to help the ball into the air

This is especially common with fairway woods, hybrids, and drivers. When a golfer tries to lift the ball, the trail shoulder may work too quickly toward the ball, the handle may stall, and the clubface can remain open. The strike often moves toward the heel as well, which can add another source of rightward curve with a driver.

The club is designed to provide loft. Your job is to make a stable strike with a predictable delivery, not to scoop the ball upward.

Why a Driver Slice Can Be Worse Than an Iron Slice

A driver magnifies delivery errors because it is longer, lighter, and swung faster. Centered contact matters more than many golfers realize. A heel strike on the driver can create additional slice spin through gear effect, even when face-to-path numbers are not extreme.

That is why a golfer may hit a modest fade with an iron but lose a driver far right. The issue may be path and face, but it may also include strike location, tee height, ball position, or a driver that does not fit the player’s speed and delivery.

Equipment should not be used to hide a major swing issue. However, it should not be ignored either. A shaft, loft, lie angle, grip size, or club length that does not match the golfer can make it harder to return the face consistently. A proper fitting gives you equipment that supports the motion you are training.

How to Diagnose Your Slice Instead of Guessing

Watching the ball is a good start, but it cannot tell the whole story. Two golfers can hit a nearly identical slice for completely different mechanical reasons. One may have a severely leftward path and a relatively square face. Another may have a neutral path but a face that is simply too open. Their solutions should not be the same.

Start by noticing three things: where the ball starts, how much it curves, and where you strike the face. Use face spray or impact tape during practice to see whether contact clusters toward the heel. Then compare that information with launch-monitor measurements such as club path, face angle, face-to-path, attack angle, and strike location.

Video and 3D movement analysis add another layer. They can show whether the issue begins with setup, takeaway, transition, pressure shift, posture, or release. This is where purposeful practice becomes much more productive than hitting a large bucket and hoping one swing thought will stick.

The Right Fix Depends on Your Pattern

If your path is dramatically left but your face is reasonably controlled, your training may focus on transition, arm structure, and delivering the club from a more neutral direction. If your path is acceptable but the face is open, grip, wrist conditions, and clubface awareness may deserve more attention.

For some players, a simple feel such as allowing the trail palm to rotate more toward the ground through impact can help. For others, that same feel creates a quick hook because their face is already closing too fast. This is why a drill is only valuable when it matches the data and the golfer’s actual movement.

Avoid trying to manufacture an exaggerated in-to-out path immediately. That can replace a slice with blocks, hooks, or poor contact. A better target is a delivery window that produces a predictable start line and manageable curve. For many recreational golfers, a small repeatable fade is a stronger scoring pattern than a forced draw they cannot control.
